this started to happen recently. actually I tried your patch and it solved my problem. Now its fine, but I wonder if this patch will work with other firmwares.

This is something I wish as well.

This is exactly how the polish firmware I originally had on the phone worked.

You would make your call and while the phone was against the side of your head it would be locked, but when you pulled it away from your face the dialer would be there.

not sure why they changed it, and it's definately not something that would be worth going back to the polish firmware for but maybe someone with greater knowledge then me could figure out a way to put that back into a modified firmware.

This "hack" is done in the file rofs1\Private\10282BC4\Rules\samsung_screen.rul.
After <ScreenProximity Command='CloseToFace'/>
Add <SpeakerPhone Command='CallRouteSpeaker2Ear'/>

After <ScreenProximity Command='AwayFromFace'/>
Add <SpeakerPhone Command='CallRouteEar2Speaker'/>

There will be 2 beeps when the sound switches from ear to speaker and speaker to ear.
If you find that 2 beeps are irritating you can disable one of the two beeps by removing this 2 lines:
<Haptics PlayEffect='CallConnect'/>
<Haptics PlayEffect='CallDisconnect'/>
in the rofs1\Private\10282BC4\Rules\samsung_callconnect.r ul

rofsbuild, flash and its done

According to this file samsung_speakerphone.rul it seems that is has no effect whatsoever...
Is it possible to turn this into a patch, so we can enable/disable it?

Gets my vote too! The current behaviour (dialler disappearing) is very annoying when checking voicemail, I use speakerphone as a workaround but I'd rather not have to...
