Hi all,
as all we know the most intresting feature to save money seems to be gone at least up to the latest firmware available. This thing is surely connected to the symbian world, and i don't think is a samsung decision, but it's for sure driven remotely by nokia. In fact, neither n97 neither 5800, but since n96 included (s60v4), this service was not included. Talking to a technical service, a guy told me that he tought it was a policy choice, taken on the nokia side, but shall this be true? And afterall why samsung should follow this crazy policy? What is the real place is taking samsung with this phone? Is she building only HW and not taking care of the sw side (which is the mind let's say)??? Or will samsung choose something? Why FM transmitter is missing on i8910 and not on n97 even if both HW's have inbuilt it? on thing is sure, SIP client well initegrated in the phone is one of the most missing cool features of the s60v5 phone. Now that service like voipcheap are offering free landline calls worldwide, and now that 3g providers are lowering down rates to low data profiles for the net, nokia and symbian step back !??!?!? What can we do to sesibilize samsung to investigate the matter and make a step without the control of nokia??? |

yes but any software will satisfy our needs of sip integration as the native does.
I mean we all know the third party will not be integrated as going in the phonebook and choose internet call instead of gsm call.... |

Using pipes and the contact db API it can.

ok let's hopw something will happen soon.
Up to know there's no SIP client which connect the phone directly to my provider....fring nimbuzz and others need to log in before in another hub....and that's not good.... and the integration is quite absent |

Just an hour ago I had a conversation with a Nokia customer service representative. He finally called me after I've been complaining by email and we've been mailing forth and back about this issue for a couple of days.
I basically told him that the SIP client was the only reason left for me to buy a Nokia/Symbian phone, as all the other features that once made the Nokia N95 a unique phone are now standard everywhere (GPS, Wifi, high quality camera, A2DP, ...) and S60 for sure isn't the "sexiest" UI when it comes to usability or eye candy. In the emails I was told the same lame excuses: no customer demand, so development was too expensive + halted, 3rd party software is available anyways, sip providers are responsible for providing the software... On the phone he finally admitted that the true reason they removed it was pressure from the network carriers. Of course they don't want to make an official statment about this. But it's in fact the true reason. However, he said they forward customer complaints about this, and the way I understood him was that it's not a final call. Hence we need to make sure Nokia realizes, this is a BIG issue for MANY users and we need to make sure that Nokia gets more pressure from the customers resp. end users than from the carriers. I suggest everyone who misses the SIP clients, doesn't just complain about this in blogs and internet forums, but actually contacts Nokia's support about this. The more tickets they open on this issue the better. Tell them you won't buy their phones any more until they put the SIP client back in and tell them you will make sure your family and friends do the same. And while you're at it: Send the same email to your local Nokia support, to Nokia USA and Samsung, since we're on the Omina forum here. ;-) Like I said: The more pressure from the customers, the better! i dont' think a petition approach will solve the matters, people claiming for such a specific issue will be at least 0,1% of the total user/buyer in the market.
They will simply laugh at us. I shot an email to symbian foundation about this issue, but they replied like they dont' get the point so i replied and now i'm wating... |

With providers offering cheap all in packages I really do not have the need anymore for a VoIP solution. International calls could be an argument but again if you make alot of international calls then you're probably better off getting an international flat rate package from your provider.
VoIP has never really worked satisfactory for me. I mean back in the day when you hd to pay for your data connection per kilobyte a VoIP call ended up costing more then a regular call. If you used WiFi you could effectively only use it in your own home as the signal quality of hotspots vary too much and sound quality was never guaranteed. Now we have flat-rate mobile internet but we also have packages which give you so many minutes I could never hope to use them all. So what's the point in having a SIP client then? One could argue that you want to use it on a corporate network but the supplier of the equipment ussualy also supplies the software needed for that network which in most cases is incompatible with the Nokia one.

I'm not suggesting a petition. I suggest that you guys email your frustration to Nokia instead of just posting it here. The more tickets they open and the more pressure they get from end users the better. It WILL be noticed, if customer representative have to call up customers that insist about this issue every day.
Sure, it's not the majority of people that use this functionality (yet). But those people who don't care about this kind of functionality typically don't buy S60 phones anyways but maybe an iPhone. Also, those who use this are typically technology freaks that have a big influence on the buying decisions of many other people. E.g. all of my family and many of my friends only buy what I "tell them to". ;-) |
