Default Firmware upgrade questions

It's been a while since I last upgraded my firmware, so I can't remember the answers to some basic questions.

1. If I upgrade, will it delete the data, such as photos and contacts?
2. Will it delete the programs and games I have installed? What about ringtones and
3. If so, is there a way to back it up and then retrieve the programs without having to reinstall them all?
4. I am planning on installing a cooked firmware (not sure which one yet, but I will do my homework on the various firmwares available and then decide) which has SPB Shell or something similar to get away from the boring Symbian interface, does HyperX, Faenil and the others generally have SPB or something similar in their firmwares?

That's all I can think of at the moment, there may be more questions coming up. This is a big deal for me, as I have lots of stuff installed and would like to have it up and working as fast as possible. I use the phone for work as well as pleasure.

Thanks!

yes, back it all up first (contacts wont be deleted if they are stored on sim)

yes, unless they are on your memory card

faenils startbackup works well (you have to have qt installed), also - auto installer if you do plan on installing (multpile installs with no pop ups)

nope, as its not allowed (faenil asked as he is a beta tester, they said no) but they do have some homescreens you might like

about point 2...when flashed, you wont have any apps/games installed apart from pre installed items...what i meant was that your memory card isnt touched during flashing...

I got about 80 apps installed, so i know how you feel about reflashing. I've noticed a lot of bugs and weird app problems if you backup many apps or don't format your memory card after flashing..so i always go for a clean install. A few tips though:

Most of the custom firmwares come with AutoInstaller which is a great app. Basically you just put in your sis-files into some designated folders and it installs everything automatically.

You can backup your contacts and calender very easily using this site: Syncfriend | Free Outlook and mobile sync

You can backup Opera bookmarks and SPB Shell setup as well.

Looks like a lot of work. I guess I'm gonna have to weigh the positives and negatives to decide if it's worth doing.

I took the plunge and decided it was time. I flashed Faenil's FW and then installed SPB. I must say his FW is lightning fast compared to what I had, but I don't yet know if that's because it's just faster, or because all the things I had installed just slowed it down. It's great to have a fresh start in any case. I think I managed to back up the stuff I needed. Now I am reinstalling the important things.
Thanks for the help guys!
