I'm a fairly new i8910 user, coming from an N95 which served well for two years till a screen vs screw driver incident lol.
I decided on the i8910 as I wanted a decent camera and video, but also good smartphone capablities., and well the i8910 seemed to offer the most all round (on specs at least). I've been disapointed somewhat with it's performance, the the gallery for pictures/vids is unusably slow, the Media browser isn't much better (still has slow 'loading......" ) The battery life isn't much better if at all than the N95 Photos in outdoor situations are really impressive, and smash the N95, however night type shots, the N95 is better. It's hard to get a clear photo at night with the Samsung without almost proping yourself/camera steady and freezing the subject in ice! (on this note at dinner the other night there were a number of camera phones flashing off, the i8910 seemed to have the brightest LED flash I've seen, so I don't know why it struggles so much) Video is pretty good, pitty about the drops frames but otherwise better than the 95 for sure. So onto the actual topic, I got to play with a HTC HD2 tonight and was quite impressed. It owns the i8910 in pretty much every area accept for its photo/video abilities. The interface is lighting fast, everything is instant, and visually/interactively vs the i8910 it's like comparing Windows 7 to Windows 95. It really feels like you've stepped back a decade and hit the slow motion button playing with the i8910 side by side. Features such as sms, emails, photo browsing, music player all are so so nice in comparison. Everything looks so much nicer and works so much smoother, like they actually tested the product or something crazy!!! (I'm to sure Samsung do that?) I had only ever played on older slower Win moblie phones briefly and didn't every thing they were that bad. On forums I've read bad things about WinMo, so maybe the HD2 is just special with HTC's UIsense or whatever it's called making it a bit prettier but really makes me wonder why Symbian even exists.? The sad thing is I don't think the hardware is lacking at all in the i8910. Playing a 720p recording (i8910) on the Samsung is as smooth as it gets recorded, yet the HD2 wasn't capable of smooth playback (same file) even with it's 1GB processor Visually the HD2 is nice, the phone itself is only a little wider but smaller in other aspecs than the i8910, and the 4.3inch screen really is noticably bigger. It's not AMOLED and only 65k colours (windows restricted I think). Really tho it's visually still fine. Playing back the Samsung chopper demo side by side both on high brightness, the i8910 has a bit better contrast and a little more punch but the colours are all wrong, everything gets a yellow tint. The video looks more natural and real on the HD2. Then theres multi touch which is beautiful and so smooth and fast working with images etc vs the tap, zoom wait, display of the i8910. Both are running carrier supplied firmware (Australia), so there are updates available for either phone in other regions. I can't comment on battery life, but to say playing with both at the same time doing similar tasks the i8910 seemed to be dropping faster even with it's bigger battery (1500 vs 1250 or something i think) All in all if you can live with a lesser camera you'd be crazy to get an i8910 over a HD2 in my opinon. Makes me want to ditch the i8910, get a point and shoot camera and a HD2 now. haha Last edited by Spoony; 02-06-2010 at 05:14 PM. |

the color display of the i8910 can't be wrong, its great, it's 16m colors, maybe the yellow tint is a factory defect on your phone, the HD2 only has 65k due to color limitation of windows, Honestly, if the HD2 has no color limitation on windows 6.5 (if ever that happens) and if it has a good camera, i would have bought the HD2 instead, it's 65k color limitation and bad camera is a dealbreaker for me... but i love windows 6.5 and sese ui though.. :-)

Just because its capable of 16m colours is irrelevant to its ability/calibration in displaying correct colour balance and tone. I don't have another to compare to but it definately leans on 'warm' side vs other displays I have using that chopper vid as a comparo.
I heard the HD2 comes with a Win7 mob update, one would think that would be a 16m colour capable OS. In reality tho side by side vs the i8910 the current limitation was minimal and not a concern vs the 11tybilliion other areas it trumps the i8910. Like you said it's realy on the camera side of things that would hinge the decision. |

The HD2 is a monster phone, and seems to get a lot of love from xda, but I am not sure if WinMo will survive. Market share is low, and dropping.
The announced HD2 with Android and a big ****ing AMOLED will be hard to beat though.

I've only played briefly on it but I can't see why WinMo (well the HD2 use of it) is so bad, its seems light years ahead of the i8910. WinMo7 I can imagine will be better again and no doubt removing some of the handicaps (ie 65k colour) etc.
Is android really that good, or just the latest coolness? lol. Last edited by Spoony; 02-09-2010 at 12:23 AM. |

I like my HD2 better than my i8910.
Although its not AMOLED the screen size and resolution compensate nicely. Browsing is just an absolute pleasure with the extra resolution. The music player is better, with better audio quality. The UI is better, with better Facebook/Twitter/Youtube integration. Contact management/sync is better handled. You get Office software with editing capabilities inbuilt. For me the improved availability of medical apps is important. Its capacitive touch is also better, probably because the UI implementation is better. Another strength for me is the ability to tweak many aspects of the phones behaviour, although for others this is daunting and unappealing. The only thing that bothers me is only having 16GB of storage, but 32GB cards should arrive this month from Samsung, so that will cease to be a problem. The camera is decidedly worse too, but its good enough for me to live with. I've had my HD2 3 months or so now, and as Cambo can attest, few phones last that long! It should have pretty good longevity too, since within the next couple of months dual-boot into Android should be possible, and toward the end of the year it should be getting the upgrade to WinMo 7. |

Also the HD2 just got that unofficial patch to free up the hidden RAM reserves.
I was always tempted by that phone. Went with the N1 because I use more Google applications than MS ones (aside Office, but I'm not doing too much word-processing on the phone..). As for whether WinMo7 will be something you want, I'm a bit unsure now; it's looking increasingly like they'll be following the iPhone model of being closed-off, especially when considering they approach they took for the ZuneHD. I love the way the ZuneHD UI looks; it's stunning. But it's not very efficient or effective for using a device. Here's hoping they really come out with something new, because I'd like to like WinMo 7, and the HD2 would be a great device to showcase it... |
