Depends on security setup. All network devices have MAC address's its a method of identifiying who you are over a network a little like an IP address.
With routers and network software you can lock user accounts down to a machine; good for security. With routers instead of WEP KEY, you can authorise by MAC address only, or a combination of both, for added security.
My router has a list of authorised MAC address's, if your device is not on my list it wont allow you on to my network.
